Teachable Payout Schedule: When Teachable Pays You
July 2026 · 8 min read · by the Earnly team · Updated July 2026
Teachable pays through teachable:pay, which routes money to your bank via Stripe on the schedule you choose: daily, weekly, or monthly. Free-plan schools are locked to monthly payouts, and each transfer lands a couple of business days after it is initiated. If you are still on Teachable's older Monthly Payment Gateway, the rules are different: it pays once, on the first US business day of the following month, after a rolling 30-day hold.
The confusion for most course creators is that Teachable now has two payout systems running side by side, and which one you are on decides when your money arrives. Here is the whole mechanism, current as of July 2026.
When does Teachable payout?
It depends on your payment gateway. Teachable:pay, the current built-in system powered by Stripe, initiates payouts on a frequency you set, and the money reaches your bank about 2 business days after that. The legacy Monthly Payment Gateway pays on the first business day of the next month for the prior month's sales. New schools are on teachable:pay by default, so for most sellers the answer is "on the daily, weekly, or monthly cycle you picked, plus a short bank delay."
| Payout system | When it pays | Who is on it |
|---|---|---|
| teachable:pay (daily) | Every business day, ~2 days after the sale settles | Paid plans that choose daily |
| teachable:pay (weekly) | One chosen weekday each week | Paid plans that choose weekly |
| teachable:pay (monthly) | Once a month; the only option on Teachable's no-cost tier | Teachable's no-cost tier, or paid plans that choose monthly |
| Monthly Payment Gateway (legacy) | First US business day of the following month | Older schools that never switched |
You can change your teachable:pay frequency at any time in Settings under Payments, as long as you are on a paid plan. Free-plan schools cannot change it and stay on monthly. That single restriction is the biggest reason new creators feel like Teachable pays slowly: it is not a hold, it is the plan tier.
How long does Teachable take to pay out?
On teachable:pay, a payout usually reaches your bank about 2 business days after it is initiated, because the underlying transfer runs on Stripe's standard timing. Your first payout takes longer, often 7 to 14 days, while Stripe verifies your identity and bank account. After that first transfer clears, the normal cadence kicks in and each payout follows the frequency you set.
Teachable payment methods: how you get paid
With teachable:pay, payouts go by direct bank deposit (ACH in the US) to the account you connect during setup. The older gateways worked differently and are worth knowing if you inherited an established school:
- teachable:pay. The default. Direct deposit to your bank through Stripe, on your chosen daily, weekly, or monthly schedule. No 30-day hold.
- Monthly Payment Gateway. The legacy option. Teachable collects the money, holds it about 30 days, then pays on the first business day of the next month. Slower, but it exists on some older accounts.
- Custom / BackOffice. Used to pay affiliates and co-authors. BackOffice distributes those shares roughly every 30 days on the first business day of the month.
If you run an affiliate program or split revenue with a co-instructor through BackOffice, expect those partner payouts on the monthly BackOffice cycle rather than your own faster teachable:pay schedule. The two are separate clocks.
Why your Teachable payout is smaller than your sales
A payout is what is left after Teachable and the payment processor take their cuts, and after any refunds in that window. Course sellers routinely see a gap between the sales number on the dashboard and the deposit that hits the bank, and it comes from a few places:
- Processing fees. Card processing on teachable:pay runs through Stripe at roughly 2.9% plus $0.30 per US transaction, taken before you are paid.
- Plan transaction fee. Teachable's lower tiers add a transaction fee on top of processing, while its higher tiers drop it to zero. Check your plan's rate, because it comes straight out of every sale.
- Refunds and chargebacks. A refund is deducted from the payout it falls into, so a big refund day can shrink a payout that had strong gross sales.
- Taxes collected. Sales tax or VAT that Teachable collects is not yours to keep and is not part of your payout.
None of that shows up as a line on your bank statement. The deposit is just a netted number, which is exactly why tracking the gross sale, the fees taken, and the take-home separately is worth the effort. Earnly does that automatically for course income alongside every other platform, and the platform fees calculator shows the blended rate you are really paying once processing and the plan fee stack up. Many course creators also earn affiliate income from the tools and gear they recommend to students, which you can turn into a paid link with a creator storefront and then track right beside your course payouts.
Teachable compared to other creator platforms
Teachable's payout speed sits in the middle of the pack. It is faster than the platforms that batch monthly and slower than same-day processors, and its free-plan monthly restriction is the real catch:
| Platform | Payout timing | Fastest option |
|---|---|---|
| Teachable (teachable:pay) | Daily, weekly or monthly, ~2 day bank delay | Daily on a paid plan |
| Gumroad | Weekly, every Friday once above $10 | Weekly |
| Patreon | Initiates the 5th; manual payouts available | Manual, every 24 hours |
| Twitch | Net 15, around the 15th, $50 threshold | Around the 15th |
If you sell courses on Teachable and also earn on other platforms, the timing differences add up to a messy cash-flow picture: one balance clears daily, another pays on the 5th, another on the 15th. Lining those pay dates up on a single payout calendar is the difference between knowing what is coming and refreshing four dashboards. Course creators who teach for a living usually fit the course creator income tracker workflow, where each cohort or product shows its own gross, fees and take-home.
Common Teachable payout questions
- Can I get paid daily on Teachable's no-cost tier? No. Schools on the no-cost tier are limited to monthly payouts. Daily and weekly frequencies require a paid Teachable plan.
- Why is my first Teachable payout taking so long? Stripe verifies new accounts before releasing funds, which can take 7 to 14 days. Once that first payout clears, the normal cadence begins.
- Does Teachable pay on weekends? No. Payouts and the bank transfers behind them run on business days, so a payout initiated Friday commonly posts Monday or Tuesday.
- Is a payout the same as my taxable course revenue? No. Payouts are net of fees and refunds. Your reportable revenue is gross sales, with fees as an expense. Teachable or Stripe issues a 1099-K where thresholds apply; talk to a tax professional.
- Can I change how often Teachable pays me? Yes, on a paid plan, in Settings under Payments. The change applies going forward, not to payouts already scheduled.
The habit that keeps course income legible is recording each sale against the day it happened rather than the day the payout posted. Teachable's rolling deposits blur that line, and if you read your bank as your sales dashboard you will always be a few days behind your own launch. Keeping earned-day and paid-day as separate columns is what makes a slow enrollment week visible while you can still react, and the same discipline carries across every channel, which is what tracking income from multiple platforms gets into.
