Etsy Fees Explained: Every Fee on a Sale, With a Worked Example

July 2026 · 9 min read · by the Earnly team

Etsy fees add up to roughly 11-12% of a typical US sale before ads: a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee, and payment processing of about 3% + $0.25. If an Offsite Ad drove the sale, add another 12-15% on top.

On a $30 sale, that means Etsy and its payment processor keep about $3.30, and you take home about $26.70. This guide walks through every fee on the published US schedule, then runs a full worked example so you can see exactly where each dollar goes.

The four Etsy seller fees that matter

As published on Etsy's US fee schedule in 2026, a standard sale touches up to four fees:

Fee Amount (US) Charged on When
Listing fee $0.20 per listing Each listing or renewal When you list; auto-renews every 4 months or after each sale
Transaction fee 6.5% Item price + shipping + gift wrap Every sale
Payment processing ~3% + $0.25 Total order amount, including tax Every Etsy Payments sale
Offsite Ads fee 12% or 15% The attributed order total Only when an Etsy-placed ad drove the sale

How much does Etsy take per sale, piece by piece

  • Listing fee ($0.20): charged when you create or renew a listing. A listing lasts 4 months, and when an item sells the listing renews automatically for another $0.20. Multi-quantity listings charge $0.20 again for each additional item sold.
  • Transaction fee (6.5%): the headline Etsy commission. Important detail: it applies to the item price plus shipping and gift wrap, not just the item. Charging $5 shipping costs you $0.33 in transaction fee on the shipping alone.
  • Payment processing (~3% + $0.25 US): the Etsy Payments fee for handling the card charge. Rates vary by country; the US rate is about 3% + $0.25 on the full order amount.
  • Offsite Ads (12-15%): Etsy advertises listings on Google, Facebook, Instagram and elsewhere. If a shopper clicks one of those ads and buys within 30 days, you pay 15% of that order if your shop made under $10,000 in the past 365 days, or 12% if it made more. Under $10,000 you can opt out; over $10,000 participation is required, as published.
  • Optional extras: Etsy Ads (onsite, budget you set), Etsy Plus at $10/month, and currency conversion of 2.5% when your listing currency differs from your bank currency.

Etsy fee calculation: a $30 sale, line by line

Say you sell a $26 ceramic mug with $4 shipping, so the buyer pays $30 (ignoring sales tax, which Etsy collects and remits in most US states). Here is the math on a standard sale:

Line Calculation Amount
Order total $26 item + $4 shipping $30.00
Listing renewal Flat -$0.20
Transaction fee 6.5% x $30 -$1.95
Payment processing 3% x $30 + $0.25 -$1.15
Take-home $26.70 (89% of the order)

Now the same sale attributed to an Offsite Ad, for a shop under $10,000 a year: add 15% x $30 = $4.50. Take-home drops to $22.20, or 74% of the order. One attributed sale can quietly cost more than double the fees of a normal one, which is why it pays to check attribution on your bigger orders.

Worked example: a full Etsy month, gross to take-home

Zoom out to a realistic month. Say your shop does 60 orders averaging $30, so $1,800 gross. Five of those sales came through Offsite Ads (15% tier), you listed 20 new items, and 60 listings renewed after sales:

  • Gross sales: $1,800.00
  • Listing fees: 80 x $0.20 = -$16.00
  • Transaction fees: 6.5% x $1,800 = -$117.00
  • Payment processing: (3% x $1,800) + (60 x $0.25) = -$69.00
  • Offsite Ads: 15% x $150 attributed = -$22.50
  • Take-home: $1,575.50, about 87.5% of gross

That 12.5% gap between what buyers paid and what lands in your bank is the number most sellers never see in one place. Etsy's dashboard shows sales; your bank shows deposits; the fees live in a separate CSV. An income tracker like Earnly puts the whole chain on one board, gross, fees, take-home per platform, so an Etsy month and a Gumroad month read the same way. You can model your own numbers with a platform fees calculator before you change prices.

When Etsy pays you

Etsy Payments moves funds to your payment account after each order, minus fees. Your deposit schedule can be daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly, and deposits go out when your available balance meets the minimum for your bank country (in the US there is a small minimum, and new shops often see a short holding period on early sales). Daily deposits still take a business day or two to land. If you sell on several platforms, a payout calendar keeps Etsy's deposit rhythm visible next to slower payers like YouTube or Twitch.

Five ways to keep more of each Etsy sale

  1. Price the fees in. Around 11-12% baseline means a $30 target take-home needs a roughly $34 price.
  2. Watch shipping. The 6.5% transaction fee hits shipping too, so a high shipping price does not dodge fees.
  3. Decide on Offsite Ads deliberately. Under $10,000 a year you can opt out. A 15% fee on a low-margin item can erase the profit.
  4. Renew intentionally. Auto-renew on slow listings is $0.60 a year each; that is real money across 200 listings.
  5. Reconcile monthly. Compare your Etsy statement to deposits once a month so fee changes never surprise you. Etsy adjusted its transaction fee from 5% to 6.5% in 2022, and schedules can change again.
  6. Know when the money actually lands. Fees decide how much you keep; the deposit schedule decides when you can spend it. The Etsy payout schedule covers the daily, weekly, biweekly and monthly options and the $15 US daily minimum.
