Shopify Payout Schedule: How Often Shopify Pays Out
July 2026 · 8 min read · by the Earnly team · Updated July 2026
Shopify Payments pays US merchants on a 3 business day settlement, then on the payout frequency you choose: daily, weekly, or monthly. A card charged Monday becomes available for payout around Thursday, and your bank then takes another 1 to 3 days to post it. There is no minimum payout amount in the United States, so even a small balance eventually goes out.
Shopify's schedule is one of the cleaner ones in ecommerce, but two things confuse sellers constantly: the difference between a sale and an available balance, and what the "scheduled" status on a payout actually means. Here is the whole mechanism, current as of July 2026.
What does "payout scheduled" mean on Shopify?
A payout in scheduled status has been created and queued for transfer, but the money has not left Shopify yet. It is the normal state between the end of the settlement period and the moment Shopify sends funds to your bank. It usually clears within a day of appearing. Scheduled is not an error and it does not mean a payout is on hold.
The statuses you will see in Finances, then Payouts, run in this order:
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Scheduled | Payout created and queued; funds have not been sent yet |
| In transit | Sent to your bank; waiting on the bank to post it |
| Paid | Shopify's side is complete |
| Failed | Bank rejected it, usually wrong account details |
If a payout sits in transit past 3 business days, that is a bank question, not a Shopify question. If it says failed, your bank details need fixing before the next cycle.
How often does Shopify pay out?
You choose the frequency in Settings, then Payments, then Shopify Payments, then Manage. US merchants get three options:
| Frequency | When it pays | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Daily | Every business day, after settlement | Most stores; tightest cash flow |
| Weekly | One chosen weekday | Simpler bookkeeping, fewer lines to reconcile |
| Monthly | One chosen day of the month | Low volume or side stores |
Frequency does not change the 3 business day settlement. It only decides how often the already-available money is swept to your bank. Daily plus a 3 day settlement means a rolling deposit every business day, each one covering sales from about three days earlier.
What time does Shopify payout?
Shopify does not commit to a clock time. Payouts are initiated on your scheduled day and arrival depends on your bank's posting cycle. Most US merchants on daily see funds land in the morning, but a payout initiated Friday commonly posts Monday because weekends are not business days.
Why your payout does not match your sales
Shopify's dashboard shows gross sales for a date range. A payout covers a settlement window and is net of everything Shopify took out. The two almost never match, and that is expected. What comes out:
- Payment processing. On the Basic plan with Shopify Payments, 2.9% plus $0.30 per online transaction, and 2.6% plus $0.10 in person, as published. Rates step down on higher plans.
- Refunds. Deducted from the payout they fall into, which is why a heavy refund day can shrink a payout that had strong sales.
- Chargebacks and disputes. Held out while open.
- Third-party gateway surcharge. If you use an outside gateway instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, and 0.2% on Plus.
Your plan fee is separate. Basic is $39 a month billed monthly, or $29 billed annually, and it is billed to you rather than netted out of a payout. That matters for margin math: the plan is a fixed cost you have to cover before processing even enters the picture.
Here is a $60 order on Basic:
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Order total | $60.00 |
| Processing (2.9% + $0.30) | -$2.04 |
| Into your payout | $57.96, about 96.6% |
That 3.4% is the real number to plan around, and the fixed $0.30 is why small orders hurt. On a $5 order processing eats about 12%; on a $200 order it is closer to 3%. If your average order value drops, your effective fee rate climbs even though the published rate never moved. Watching that blended rate over time is the whole point of a platform fees calculator, and it is the kind of drift a monthly glance at gross sales will never surface. Once you want those payouts rolled into a real profit and loss statement, the netted deposit lines are the input you start from.
Shopify compared to the marketplaces
The structural difference is that Shopify takes no commission on the sale itself. A marketplace does. That is the trade you are making when you pay a plan fee:
| Platform | Commission | Payout timing |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Payments | None; 2.9% + $0.30 processing on Basic | 3 business day settlement, then daily, weekly or monthly |
| Etsy | 6.5% transaction + ~3% + $0.25 processing | Daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly |
| Amazon (Professional) | Referral fee by category, commonly 8% to 15% | Every 14 days, plus reserve rules |
Shopify is cheaper per order and more expensive per month, so the crossover depends entirely on volume. We worked the exact break-even in Etsy versus Shopify fees, and the answer for a typical $30 order is lower than most sellers expect. If you run both, the Shopify profit tracker page covers keeping each channel's gross, fees and take-home side by side rather than in two browser tabs.
Common Shopify payout questions
- Can I get paid faster than 3 business days? Not on standard Shopify Payments in the US. The settlement period is fixed. Changing frequency to daily is the only lever that shortens the wait.
- Why did my payout go down when sales went up? Almost always refunds or a dispute landing in that window, or an average order value drop pushing your effective fee rate up.
- My payout failed. What now? Fix the bank details in Shopify Payments settings. The funds are not lost; they roll into the next cycle once the account is valid.
- Do I get a payout on weekends? No. Settlement and payouts run on business days, so Friday and weekend sales generally settle Tuesday or Wednesday.
- Is a payout the same as revenue for taxes? No. Payouts are net of fees and refunds. Your reportable revenue is gross sales, with fees as an expense. Shopify issues a 1099-K where thresholds apply; talk to a tax professional.
The habit worth building here is recording sales against the day they were earned rather than the day the payout posted. Shopify's rolling daily deposits blur that line badly: a Thursday deposit is really Monday's business, and if you read your bank as your dashboard you will always be reacting to a three day old store. Keeping earned-day and paid-day as separate columns is what makes a slow week visible while you can still do something about it, and the same discipline applies across every channel, which is what tracking income from multiple platforms gets into.
