FreshBooks Pricing 2026: Lite $23, Plus $43

September 2026 · 7 min read · by the Earnly team

FreshBooks costs $23 a month for Lite, $43 for Plus and $70 for Premium in the US, with Select priced on a custom quote. The plans are capped by billable clients, 5 on Lite, 50 on Plus and unlimited on Premium, and every plan includes one user; each extra team member is $11 a month. Paying yearly takes about 10% off. Payroll is a $40 a month add-on plus $6 per person, and Advanced Payments is $20 a month.

Those figures were read from freshbooks.com/pricing on September 26, 2026. Several pricing roundups that rank for this search still quote $19, $33 and $60 for the same three plans, and one lists a $21 to $65 range. Neither matches what FreshBooks charges today, so if a budget was built from one of those pages, it is short by $4 to $10 a month per plan. If you are a freelancer or creator whose income arrives from platforms as well as from invoiced clients, Earnly's income board covers the platform side, and we explain below where FreshBooks stops.

The yearly column applies the extra 10% FreshBooks advertises for annual billing to the monthly list price; the exact figure at checkout can differ by a few cents. Prices are in USD and exclude sales tax. FreshBooks also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on purchased plans, so a yearly plan is less of a gamble than it looks.

What the current FreshBooks promotion actually costs

The US pricing page is running two offers. Lite is $1 a month for the first year under what FreshBooks calls its Solopreneur offer. Plus and Premium are 80% off for three months, which shows as $8.60 and $14 a month. Both then renew at the list price above.

PlanPromo pricePromo lengthYear one with promoYear two at list
Lite$1 a month12 months$12$276
Plus$8.60 a month3 months$412.80$516
Premium$14 a month3 months$672$840

The Lite offer is the one to think hard about. Twelve dollars for a year of invoicing is cheap, but the 5-client cap is still there, and the day a sixth client needs an invoice you move to Plus at full price. Promotions on this page change often, so treat the table as a worked example and check the live offer before you buy.

The add-ons that change the real FreshBooks cost

Three add-ons are priced on the plan cards, and for many buyers they matter more than the tier.

Add-onPriceWho needs it
Team Members$11 a month per personAnyone with a partner, assistant or employee who needs their own login
Advanced Payments$20 a month, included on SelectBusinesses that take card payments by phone or keep cards on file for recurring billing
FreshBooks Payroll$40 a month plus $6 per personBusinesses running W-2 payroll inside FreshBooks

Team members are the add-on that surprises people. A three-person studio on Plus pays $43 plus two seats at $11, which is $65 a month, before any payment processing. That is more than Xero Growing at $59 from October 1, 2026, which includes unlimited users. Payroll for five people adds $70 a month. Card and ACH processing on paid invoices is charged per transaction on top of all of this.

FreshBooks Lite vs Plus: the client cap decides it

FreshBooks prices by billable clients rather than by features, and that makes the choice unusually mechanical. Count the clients you invoice in a typical year, not a typical month. If it is 5 or fewer, Lite covers you. If it is 6 to 50, you need Plus, and the jump from $23 to $43 is an 87% increase driven entirely by the shape of your work.

That hits short-engagement businesses hardest. A consultant with three long retainers can stay on Lite for years. A photographer shooting 30 weddings, a designer doing one-off logo jobs, or a creator invoicing a different brand for each sponsored post passes five clients in the first quarter. Plus also adds proposals, client retainers, financial and accounting reports, expense receipt scanning and accountant access, so the upgrade is not only a cap removal, but the cap is almost always what forces it.

Premium at $70 makes sense past 50 clients, or when you want project profitability tracking and customized email templates. Select is for teams that want dedicated phone support, lower card transaction fees, two team member accounts at no extra charge and Advanced Payments bundled in, and it is quoted individually.

Is FreshBooks worth the price?

FreshBooks is worth it for a service business that lives on invoices: it is fast to set up, clients find the invoices easy to pay, and time tracking, estimates and proposals sit in the same place. For a solo freelancer with a handful of clients, Lite at $23 is fair value.

It is weaker value in three situations. If more than one person needs access, the $11 seats add up fast and per-organization tools like Xero come out cheaper. If you sell products through storefronts, a ledger with marketplace connectors, such as QuickBooks Simple Start, fits better. And if much of your income comes from platforms rather than clients, FreshBooks has little to do with it. A YouTube AdSense payment, a Patreon payout or a Gumroad deposit is not an invoice to a client. It arrives in your bank feed as one net number, and FreshBooks records the deposit, not what the platform collected or what it kept in fees.

That last gap is the one Earnly covers. It reads payouts from each platform and shows gross, fees and take-home for every source on one board, with a payout calendar and a next-month forecast that is always labeled an estimate. Earnly Solo is $12 a month billed yearly for 3 income sources. Many creators run FreshBooks for brand-deal invoices and Earnly for platform income, and neither tool pretends to be the other. Our multi-platform income tracker page shows what that board looks like.

Cheaper FreshBooks alternatives, by the same cost logic

If the client cap or the per-seat price is the problem, compare on the cap that will actually bind you. Xero Early is $27 a month from October 1 with unlimited users but only 20 invoices a month. Zoho Books Standard is $20 with 3 users. QuickBooks Simple Start is $38 for one user with a full ledger. Wave covers basic invoicing for service businesses at a lower price. Our FreshBooks alternatives breakdown goes through each, and the FreshBooks vs QuickBooks vs Xero comparison covers the workflow differences rather than just the price.

One cost no plan removes is chasing unpaid invoices. FreshBooks includes automated late payment reminders and scheduled late fees, and for most freelancers that is enough. If late payers are a real drain on cash flow across dozens of clients, a dedicated tool that chases every overdue invoice by email and SMS can recover more than the difference between two FreshBooks tiers.

How to pay less for FreshBooks

1. Count clients per year before choosing a plan. The client cap, not the feature list, decides whether Lite works.

2. Pay yearly once you know you are staying. About 10% off, and the 30-day money-back guarantee still applies to a new purchase.

3. Delete clients you no longer bill, do not just archive them. FreshBooks counts both active and archived clients toward the plan limit. Deleting a client frees the spot, and FreshBooks keeps that client's past invoices accessible and lets you undelete them later. Archiving alone keeps you on a bigger plan than you need.

4. Price the team before adding seats. At $11 per person, three extra users cost $396 a year. If several people need access, compare against a per-organization tool before paying for seats.
