In short
Etsy charges US sellers three fees on a standard sale: a $0.20 listing fee each time an item sells, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus the shipping you charge the buyer, and Etsy Payments processing of 3% plus $0.25 per order. On a $28 item with $6 shipping that comes to $0.20 plus $2.21 plus $1.27, so $3.68 in fees on a $34 order and a $30.32 deposit, which is 10.8% of the order. Add the Offsite Ads fee and the picture changes sharply: shops with under $10,000 in sales over the prior 365 days pay 15% on an ad-attributed order and may opt out, while shops at or above $10,000 pay 12% and cannot opt out for the life of the shop. That fee is capped at $100 per order. On the same $34 order a 15% Offsite Ads charge adds $5.10 and takes the effective rate to 25.8%. Sales tax that Etsy collects and remits is excluded from these numbers because it was never your money. The figure that surprises sellers at tax time is different again: Etsy deposits you the net, but the 1099-K reports your gross, so the amount the IRS sees is larger than anything that reached your bank.

How much does Etsy take from a sale?
On an ordinary US sale Etsy takes $0.20 for the listing, 6.5% of the item price plus the shipping you charge, and 3% plus $0.25 for payment processing. That works out to roughly 10% to 12% of a typical order, higher on small orders because two of the three fees are flat. If the sale came through an Offsite Ad, add 15% or 12% of the order total and the effective rate moves into the mid twenties.
Does Etsy charge a fee on shipping?
Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to the total the buyer pays, which includes the shipping you charge and any gift wrap. This is the single most common miscalculation in Etsy pricing. Charging $6 for shipping adds $0.39 of transaction fee plus $0.18 of processing, so around $0.57 of the shipping you collected goes to Etsy before you buy the label.
Can I opt out of Etsy Offsite Ads?
Only while your shop has made under $10,000 in the previous 365 days. Below that threshold participation is optional and the fee is 15% of an attributed order. Once your shop reaches $10,000 in a 365 day window, the rate drops to 12% but participation becomes mandatory for the lifetime of the shop, and it stays mandatory even if sales later fall back under $10,000. Etsy checks the threshold at the start of each month, and the fee is capped at $100 on any single order.
How much does it cost to sell on Etsy?
Nothing to open a shop, then $0.20 to publish each listing, which lasts four months or until the item sells. After that you pay per sale: 6.5% transaction plus 3% and $0.25 processing in the US. A seller listing 40 items and making 30 sales a month at $28 with $6 shipping pays about $8 in listing fees and about $105 in per-sale fees. Why is my Etsy deposit lower than my sales total?
Because Etsy deducts every fee before it pays you, so the deposit is already net while your sales total is gross. Refunds, shipping labels you bought through Etsy, and any Etsy Ads spend come out of the same balance, which is why the deposit rarely matches a clean percentage of sales. Do I pay tax on the gross or the net?
Your taxable receipts are the gross, not the deposit. Etsy reports gross sales on a Form 1099-K, and for 2026 that form issues only when you exceed both $20,000 and 200 transactions, a threshold that reverted under the law signed on July 4, 2025.
